Patrick Cudahy Inc., Cudahy

More than 1,000 workers evacuated when a giant vat of grease was ignited by a welder’s torch, activating the sprinkler system.

Firefighters from 10 departments were called to the fire shortly after 10:00 a.m. Smoke was billowing from the windows and doors. Other than some water damage caused when the sprinklers activated, it appeared to be contained in the deodorizer, said Vice President of Human Resources Dan Habighorst, as reported in a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article.

Workers were allowed to work in all areas except the refinery later that afternoon and full production resumed the next day.
